“We do not compromise on quality” – Villa in Záhorské sady

The latest joint venture from the workshop of the Staviame z dreva platform is the realization of a villa in Záhorské sady.

It is obvious that the combination of two elements – architectural and construction – with their many years of experience, unique handwriting and, in our country, with a not entirely traditional approach to implementation, must result in spectacular projects. A great example of a completed exceptional wooden project is a family house situated in Záhorské sady near Záhorská Bystrica. The author of the whole project is Ing. arch. Pavol Pokorný | POKORNY ARCHITEKTI, who collaborated with Mgr. art. Bjørn Kierulf from the Createrra studio. Bjørn is a Norwegian who has lived in Slovakia for many years and is a specialist in passive houses. It has more than 80 successful passive projects under its belt, many of which are built with extensive use of renewable materials. As he says: “We do not compromise on quality.” Other collaborators were Ing. arch. Tomáš Ružiak and Ing. arch. Patrícia Botková. The main contractor was Kontrakting.

The assignment that came to the team of architects in the summer of 2015 was quite clearly defined. Just before retirement age, after years spent in rented residences abroad, the couple knew exactly what their future shared house should meet. They had a beautiful plot of land with a view of the forests and an area of 1500 m2. The basis for comfortable and barrier-free living is a large garage, plenty of storage space and a structurally separate kitchen. The center of the living space is the living room with an audio/video zone. The main living area is smoothly connected to a shared study, and in the quieter part of the house there is a bedroom with a large wardrobe and sanitary facilities. The couple wanted to incorporate the beautiful southern view into the design of the house so that they could enjoy it all year round, but at the same time to protect them from the harsh southern sun. For this reason, they decided to build a bio-pond with non-chemically treated water with the possibility of swimming on the house/garden interface. The area on which the house stands is strictly regulated, so the final area of the built-up area is 310 m2 with two above-ground floors.

The above-mentioned assignment for the future house took the form of a competition, which the POKORNY ARCHITECTS studio approached in a very original way. Instead of a standard architectural study (situation, floor plans, views, sections, visualizations), they prepared a video blog in which they devoted themselves to various analyses and strategies on how the land in space can be handled and what each implementation can look like in the end.

No definitive proposal, a few sketches, references, a lot of talking and reflection. The video blog worked and the architectural studio succeeded in the competition. The clients understood it as a fair invitation to cooperation and the key for them was that they were an equal partner in the discussion about the future form of the house. The concept of “open dialogue with a minimum of final drawings” is certainly not universally applicable, but in this case it was the key to winning the competition and foreshadowed the character of the entire cooperation, from the beginning of the design to the final implementation of the construction.

The architectural design itself is very simple – everything important that happens in the house has contact with the southern exterior and garden. The center of the house consists of a living area with a height of 6 meters and a separate kitchen. This core is surrounded in the east by a bedroom and study, in the west by a garage and in the north by the technological background of the house. Upstairs we find two guest rooms with sanitary facilities. Although the villa is not a completely passive house, Pavol Pokorný tried to transfer the benefits of energy-efficient construction here. The south façade of the house is recessed along its entire length under a 3-meter-wide canopy, which provides a full-fledged covered space between the interior and the garden. When entering from the garden to the interior, one finds oneself in the kitchen, which has a glass roof and beautifully illuminates the entire space. Roller shutter shading and a ventilation system are a matter of course.

The decisive element creating the basic feeling in the house is the joint decision of the architect and the investors to build the entire house as a prefabricated wooden building. The Lignotrend construction system with an integrated acoustic ceiling and natural light create excellent acoustics and an inimitable atmosphere in the house. The garden is dominated by a bio-pond with the possibility of swimming, which also cools the outdoor environment. The source of heat and cold are two geothermal wells. The house also has underfloor heating and wall cooling.
