This is how we built – Tennis hall COUNTRY KLUB in Belá

The construction of the hall is located in the area of “COUNTRY SALOON” on the outskirts of the village of Belá in the district of Žilina, on the left side of the main road in the direction of Terchová. The area includes a hotel*** with the function of a small congress, wellness and restaurant.

Urban solution

For the construction of the tennis hall, the investor used a vacant undeveloped area, situated to the east of the hotel. A tennis hall and outdoor sports areas expand the services offered by the complex.

This solution creates a sufficiently large free space between the hotel building and the planned construction, in which the main entrance to the new building and the outdoor tennis court are located.

The solution for the addition of the complex also includes green areas around the tennis hall and outdoor sports fields, a small children’s playground between the restaurant and hotel wellness building, as well as a change in the outdoor wellness solution (outdoor sauna replaced by immersion tubs with hot water).

Architectural design

The architectural and artistic design was influenced by the following factors:

  1. the investor’s requirements for the creation of sufficient spatial capacities for his needs,
  2. orientation of the proposed object to the cardinal points,
  3. urban and layout requirements of the investor,
  4. geometric parameters of the land and its limitations,
  5. the investor’s requirements for the architectural design of the building and its material and technical solution,
  6. The authors’ approach to the creation of layout and architectural-mass design.

In the design, all requirements and the resulting possibilities of architectural expression were evaluated and respected.

The tennis hall can be perceived as a composition of two primary parts – masses. The first is the tennis hall itself – an indoor tennis court. It consists of a longitudinal – rectangular mass, covered with a longitudinally sloping saddle (shallow) roof. The dimensions correspond to the requirements for the game of tennis, including doubles. The size of the area is approximately 36×16 m. The height parameters correspond to the requirements for recreational tennis, but they do not meet the requirements for competitive matches. When creating them, we took into account the material connection with the nearby hotel. The goal was that the mass and architecture of the tennis hall should not suppress the hotel building, but complement it appropriately. The longitudinally sloping roof supports this intention, especially when viewed from the road.

The second part is a one-storey “extension” of the facilities, which consists of a longitudinal inclined mass at the height of one above-ground floor, placed perpendicular to the tennis hall, in the northern part of the layout. This mass composition creates a small square between the hotel and the hall, used for other sports activities and relaxation. The background is covered with a flat roof, dynamically inclined in view, which subsequently corresponds to and adapts the concept of windows, glazing and ceilings.

The architectural expression of the whole is formed into a classic, but at the same time interesting and modern design. The composition of two different parts and the combination of glazed and solid parts created an interesting mass and architectural expression, suppressing the size of the tennis hall.

The material design is mainly dominated by wood. It is also used as a material for the main load-bearing elements of a tennis hall – beams and columns, as well as a cladding material for walls in the exterior and interior. The hall is illuminated by richly dimensioned glazed areas in the external cladding. The main wooden frames of the hall are solid walls made of glulam timber. The external cladding is designed as a sandwich wooden structure with inserted thermal insulation in the middle. The lower part of the background is brick, with a ceiling made of wooden trusses.

The paved area in front of the main entrance, covered with concrete pavement, is complemented by interesting green areas.

The load-bearing structure of the tennis hall consists of 13 glued wooden frames with a span between the uprights of 17.15 m. They are axially 3.085 m apart.

The building is based on reinforced concrete foundation footings, reinforced with steel rods in the axis of the frames. The height of the footings is 2.87 m. Foundation stiffeners are installed between the footings.

Sandwich wooden walls with mineral filling are fixed between the frames. The structure of the walls consists of uprights and transoms made of 160×60 mm profiles. From the front of the hall, support support columns against the wind with dimensions of 160×160 mm are installed in the wall. On the structure prepared in this way, a DHF board is then fixed on the exterior side, which stiffens the entire wooden structure of posts and transoms. From the outside, the walls are insulated with additional insulation 50 mm thick, laid between the structural frames and covered with exterior wooden cladding. An air gap is ventilated between the cladding and the wall. On the inside, they are lined with OSB boards 18 mm thick with a treated surface (stained, varnish + paint), which also form the final surface treatment of the walls.
