How did the weekend house in Smrečany come about? The author Pavol Pokorný from the architectural office Pokorny Architects describes it as follows:
The Liptov region has long been a sought-after top recreational location. The client was not a newcomer to the region, he owned an older house here for a long time, which was no longer enough to meet the requirements of a young, growing family. We started working with the client only after buying a plot of land in Smrečany. I admit, if he had called us for a consultation before buying the land, we would most likely not have recommended it to him. Although the long and narrow plot had a favorable east-west orientation, on the south side, on the border of the neighboring plot, for incomprehensible reasons, there was a family house with windows of living rooms oriented to our client’s plot (the situation continues).
After initial scepticism, we reached for the proven spatial concept of an atrium house as the only solution that would provide the residents of the house with the benefit of the southern sun and at the same time filter out the social exposure of the activities of both neighboring houses.
The house is divided into three wings, which are oriented around the atrium. The east wing consists of an entrance carport with a connection to the main entrance to the house and a warehouse for sports equipment. The north wing includes the main living area (with an open saddle roof), in the west wing there are bedrooms with an adjacent outdoor terrace.
The house is being built as a prefabricated wooden building.” Contact Us

The building was also reviewed extremely positively by the web portal about architecture archinfo.sk in its article “Weekend House Smrečany”:
“Nice work with context in complex spatial relationships. An example showing the key importance of an architectural concept on what the end result will be. The disadvantages and limits of the land were transformed into a solution that ensured enough privacy and a very good quality of living. The Renaissance of the anciently arranged, today not so often used in Liptov, atrium layout around the central courtyard. The result is a simple, down-to-ground, barrier-free solution. The calm, linear masses are made special by the silhouette of the gable roof. The contact with the surroundings is excellent. Not only can you live ‘inside’, but the living space also expands to the adjacent outdoor areas in good weather.”
