Due to the fact that the Chapel of the Virgin Mary was no longer sufficient in terms of capacity due to the increase in the number of visitors to Živčáková, the idea of building a church with the necessary capacity was born. The preparatory work and later the entire management of the construction and supervision were undertaken by the administrator of the parish of Korňa, Dean Ivan Mahrík. The year 2008 became a key year, when in September Mons. Tomáš Galis, bishop of the newly established Diocese of Žilina, allowed the construction of the Church of the Virgin Mary Mother of the Church together with the retreat and pastoral facility. Already in October of the same year, he solemnly consecrated the foundation stone of the church and the construction could officially begin. The author of the design and the processor of the project of the new church was Ing. arch. Marián Goč.
The assignment was a challenge for us. It was only at meetings with the architect that we learned his specific idea of the roof. The architect’s idea was a roof that has the shape of a four-leaf clover in the ground plan, created by four separate roof planes. With an irregular floor plan, this is a difficult trigonometric assignment. The precise work of surveyors and our designers caused the need for rectification modification of the already prepared building in a position of sometimes more than ± 50 centimeters. We succeeded.
The second problem was the transport of long glued beams along a winding forest road to the vicinity of the building. Subsequently, it was necessary to solve the high-altitude transport from the place of the handling area after the necessary modifications of the beams to the place of storage. The initial enthusiasm for the helicopter fell to the freezing point after finding out the price of the transport. In the end, a solution was found. From the trucks, the load of glued beams was assembled in the village of Korňa. From the intermediate landfill in Korňa, we transported beams one or two pieces at a short stanchion designed for transporting logs from hard-to-reach terrain. The klaničiak got close to the construction site on the handling area, where we adjusted the beams, mounted the necessary anchoring elements on them and placed them on the prepared supports using three cranes in a row.
Seven years after the beginning of construction, the Church of Our Lady of the Church was solemnly consecrated on October 4, 2015 by the diocesan bishop of Žilina, Mons. Tomáš Galis.
The celebration, which was prepared by the Bishop’s Office in Žilina and the Korňa Parish, began in the Chapel of the Virgin Mary, which is approximately 700 meters away from the new church. After the introductory services, a procession was formed and together with the remains of Saints Andrew – Svorad and Benedict, St. John Paul II, St. Maria Goretti and Blessed Sister Zdenka, it headed to the new church. After receiving the keys to the new church, a solemn Holy Mass followed. At the end of the Holy Mass, documents were signed in memory of the consecration and words of gratitude and appreciation were spoken to those who contributed the most to the construction of the church. About 15 thousand pilgrims took part in the ceremony of consecration of the temple.
